Suboxone, buprenorphine and Vivitrol providers in New York
Office-based buprenorphine may be available through primary care, psychiatry, and addiction medicine. Search FindTreatment.gov by ZIP code and ask whether a practice prescribes buprenorphine or offers injectable medication. The New York HOPEline can also connect you with treatment and recovery support options.
Listings reflect the CMS Medicare OTP provider file dated September 8, 2026, rather than a complete census of every treatment provider. Confirm hours, intake, services and insurance with each clinic.
Medication assisted treatment New York: Options by Medication
Methadone clinics in New York
New York has 92 Medicare-enrolled methadone OTP locations, including 50 across Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island. Methadone for opioid use disorder is dispensed through certified OTPs, with visits often frequent when treatment begins. New York OTPs are overseen by OASAS and federal authorities. Ask about assessments, dosing schedules and whether take-home medication is appropriate. Learn more in our methadone treatment guide and OTP explainer.
Suboxone doctors in New York and buprenorphine providers
Many people can explore buprenorphine care in an office-based medical setting rather than making daily OTP visits. A New York primary-care clinician or addiction specialist may offer buprenorphine, and some assessments may be possible by telehealth under applicable rules. New York HOPEline can help people locate options across the state, including outside the 29 counties with CMS-listed OTPs. For an overview of medication types, read our buprenorphine and Suboxone guide and OUD medication overview.
Long-acting injectable buprenorphine: Sublocade and Brixadi
New Yorkers interested in a longer-acting buprenorphine option can ask a qualified medical provider about Sublocade or Brixadi. These injections are administered by health professionals according to each product’s prescribing requirements, and suitability depends on clinical assessment. Availability can vary among providers in NYC, Long Island, and upstate communities. The NYS HOPEline may help with treatment referrals. Read about Sublocade and discuss medication choices with your treating clinician.
Vivitrol in New York: extended-release naltrexone
Extended-release naltrexone (Vivitrol) is another medication option for opioid use disorder in New York. Unlike methadone and buprenorphine, it blocks opioid receptors and requires an appropriate opioid-free period before starting, under medical supervision, to avoid precipitated withdrawal. New York Medicaid includes naltrexone in its OUD medication coverage requirement, though individual benefits and administration details should be checked. Learn more in our naltrexone/Vivitrol treatment guide.
| Medication | Where in New York | Visits at start | New York Medicaid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Methadone | Certified OTP | Often frequent | Covered |
| Buprenorphine / Suboxone | Qualified office-based provider or appropriate clinic | Depends on treatment plan | Covered |
| Sublocade / Brixadi | Qualified injection provider | Per product schedule and assessment | Ask plan about product details |
| Naltrexone / Vivitrol | Qualified prescribing and administering provider | Assessment, then injection schedule if appropriate | Covered |
Methadone (OTP) Rules in New York
New York opioid treatment programs are certified by the New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS) and follow federal standards under 42 CFR Part 8. People seeking methadone can contact an OTP in the directory to ask about admission assessments, medical evaluation, and initial dosing arrangements. An OTP determines what is clinically appropriate, including visit frequency.
Take-home doses and ongoing care
Federal OTP rules updated in 2024 allow increased clinical flexibility for take-home methadone. New York programs must also follow applicable state requirements, and a clinician evaluates safety and eligibility. Take-home doses are not automatic. Ask the OTP about program expectations, medication storage, counseling availability, and how the team handles changes in your schedule.
Guest dosing, transfers and intake preparation
For a move between New York cities or travel into the state, ask both clinics how they coordinate guest dosing or a transfer. Before an initial appointment, ask what identification, medication list, insurance information and clinical records would be useful. If you are unsure where to start, New York HOPEline can provide referrals.
Paying for MAT in New York
MAT clinics that accept Medicaid in New York
New York Medicaid, administered by the NYS Department of Health, covers methadone, buprenorphine and naltrexone for opioid use disorder under the federal Medicaid MAT coverage requirement. New York expanded Medicaid effective January 1, 2014, according to KFF. Specific pharmacy, authorization and provider-network processes can vary. Start with the New York Medicaid website and ask a participating clinic to check your benefits.
| Service | Covered | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Methadone for OUD | Yes | Provided through certified OTPs; confirm provider participation |
| Buprenorphine | Yes | Plan and dispensing arrangements may vary |
| Naltrexone | Yes | Ask about formulation, administration and pharmacy benefits |
Medicare and OTP services
Medicare Part B includes an OTP benefit for eligible services from enrolled programs, including qualifying methadone treatment. Prescription benefits for certain take-home medications can involve Medicare Part D or another applicable benefit. Check your plan and the program’s enrollment before scheduling an appointment at one of New York’s 92 CMS-listed OTP locations.
Private insurance and network questions
If you have employer or other private insurance in New York, ask for both addiction-treatment and pharmacy benefits. Mental-health parity protections do not mean every clinician or medication formulation is covered in every circumstance. Request an explanation of copays, deductibles, prior authorization, and any out-of-network costs before starting care.
No insurance or concerns about cost
New York HOPEline, 1-877-846-7369, can help direct you toward treatment and recovery support. Ask programs about eligibility screening, financial assistance and options near your home. For a clearer picture of cost, see insurance coverage, MAT cost guidance, or verify insurance.

Telehealth MAT in New York
Telehealth Suboxone in New York may be an option for some patients when a clinician can safely evaluate and prescribe under federal and state requirements. Federal DEA/HHS controlled-medication telemedicine flexibilities extend through December 31, 2026; additional New York rules and individual clinical policies may apply. An initial video appointment does not guarantee a prescription.
Methadone for opioid use disorder still requires treatment through a certified OTP. If you live in a New York county without a CMS-listed OTP, explore office-based buprenorphine and ask whether an in-person visit or local pharmacy arrangement is necessary. See our telehealth MAT guide.
Opioid Overdose in New York: Why Access Matters
New York recorded 4,449 drug overdose deaths in 2024, according to CDC NCHS data reported by KFF, down from a peak of 6,358 in 2022. The age-adjusted all-drug overdose death rate declined from 31.4 per 100,000 in 2022 to 21.3 in 2024. New York’s 2024 rate was lower than the national 23.1, but the number of lives lost remained substantial.
| Year | NY all-drug rate | NY opioid rate |
|---|---|---|
| 2019 | 18.2 | 14.9 |
| 2020 | 25.4 | 21.8 |
| 2021 | 28.7 | 24.5 |
| 2022 | 31.4 | 26.7 |
| 2023 | 31.1 | 26.2 |
| 2024 | 21.3 | 16.5 |
New York’s 2024 opioid-involved death rate was 16.5 per 100,000 (CDC NCHS via KFF). This makes continued access to medications for OUD and naloxone important in both urban and rural communities. Learn how naloxone can reverse an opioid overdose.

Overdose prevention and the Good Samaritan law
New York’s Opioid Overdose Prevention initiative has more than 900 registered programs that train people and distribute naloxone, according to NYS DOH. Its 2011 Good Samaritan law provides specified protections for people seeking medical help during an overdose, including some substance-possession situations. It has important exceptions involving serious offenses, sale or intent to sell, warrants, and supervision violations; it is not blanket immunity. Call 911 during a suspected overdose. Read ways to support someone with OUD.
MAT Access for Special Populations in New York
Pregnant and postpartum people
Pregnant New Yorkers with opioid use disorder should seek individualized care with an obstetric clinician and an OUD-treatment provider. Methadone and buprenorphine are established treatment options during pregnancy, and abruptly stopping medication without medical guidance can pose risks. New York HOPEline can help identify treatment programs; ask about coordinated prenatal care, postpartum follow-up, and insurance support. Treatment plans should consider both patient health and continuing access after delivery.
Veterans
Veterans in New York can ask their VA care team about evidence-based medications for opioid use disorder and how addiction treatment coordinates with mental-health or primary-care services. The CMS directory above includes public OTP listings, but it is not a directory of every VA treatment program. The NYS HOPEline also supports general referrals if someone needs additional local options or help outside their current system.
Adolescents and young adults
Young people in New York can ask an addiction-medicine clinician which medication and support services are appropriate for their age and circumstances. New York’s 911 Good Samaritan Law includes protections that can apply regardless of age, including specified underage-alcohol situations, when someone seeks emergency assistance. For crisis support, call or text 988; for treatment navigation, contact the NYS HOPEline.
People leaving jail or prison
For New Yorkers returning home from incarceration, continuity of OUD medication can be especially important. Ask the discharge team to coordinate treatment records, a pharmacy or OTP appointment, and insurance reactivation where relevant. Someone relocating to a New York county with no CMS-listed OTP may want to discuss office-based buprenorphine or a transfer plan early, rather than risk an interruption in treatment.
Rural residents
Rural residents in the 33 New York counties without a CMS-listed OTP may face transportation or scheduling barriers. The regions above identify nearby OTP cities to investigate, while a local primary-care clinician may offer buprenorphine. Depending on the current rules and clinical circumstances, telehealth can reduce some visits. The NYS HOPEline provides statewide assistance in finding treatment and harm-reduction services.
How to Choose a MAT Clinic in New York
